A spring and fall exterior checklist
Twelve things worth checking around the outside of your home when the seasons change.
Water first
Clear leaves and seed pods from gutters and confirm that water flows to the downspouts. Run a hose to watch for leaks at the joints. Make sure downspout extensions carry water several feet from the foundation.
Check that soil and mulch slope away from the house rather than toward it.
Surfaces and seals
Walk the perimeter and look at paint and trim for peeling or soft spots. Press gently on suspect wood with a screwdriver tip. Look at the caulk around windows and doors, where cracks or gaps are easiest to spot.
Inspect decks and steps for loose fasteners, movement and wear.
Before the weather turns
In fall, disconnect and drain hoses, and check that outdoor faucets drain. In spring, look for winter damage on roofing edges, fences and walkways, and clean surfaces that collected grime.
Take photos each season from the same spots. Side-by-side comparisons make changes obvious.
